Titicaca Lodge Peru

Built from totora reed cut in the shallows around it, the lodge floats on an artificial island in Lake Titicaca, a short boat ride from the harbour at Qalapajra. The island moves gently underfoot. Each of the four rooms carries its own name and view: Sky Dome, Lake Panoramic, Titicaca Panoramic, and Andean Sky Dome, ranging from 80 to 120 square metres, each with a king or queen bed, a private terrace, and a deck facing the water. Panoramic windows frame 270 degrees of lake and sky, and at night you can see stars undimmed by any town light for kilometres. Power comes from solar panels, enough for lights and phones; hot water depends on the sun, and heating runs on gas for a few hours each evening. Baths are dry composting toilets, chosen so the lake stays unpolluted. The family that owns the lodge is Uros, born and raised on these floating islands, and guides guests through reed-boat rides, canoeing, and kayaking among the totora beds. Meals run to breakfast and dinner, taken with views of the water. It is a modest, working island, not a resort. Guests reach it by lake transfer from Puno, arriving as visitors and, by most accounts, leaving on rather better terms than that.
