Toberua is a private island of five sandy acres, set east of Viti Levu in Fiji's Lomaiviti Group. It is reached by a road transfer from Suva Airport followed by a short boat crossing, and the arrival itself sets the tone: no bridge, no causeway, just water. Sixteen oceanfront bures ring the shore, built by local craftsmen from bamboo and coconut fibre under high thatched roofs, each with a shaded deck facing the lagoon. A three-bedroom villa, Lagilagi, sleeps up to ten guests for families or groups travelling together.
The surrounding reef is the real draw. Dive sites within a short boat ride hold hard and soft coral, white tip reef sharks, turtles and eagle rays, with visibility running to 40 metres in water that stays a steady 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Snorkelling starts straight off the beach. On land, a nine-hole reef golf course designed by Australian artist Ken Done in 1985 loops along the sand, and a saltwater pool sits under palm shade for those who would rather not swim in the sea. Kayaks, a sailboat and paddleboards are kept at the marina.
Meals change daily around whatever fish and produce come in that morning, served at tables by the water. Day trips run out to Bird Island, a mangrove river, and neighbouring villages for a kava ceremony. The whole island can also be booked out for a single group.
