Tortugal Boutique River Lodge

Fringed by hardwood and cacao trees, the peninsula at Tortugal catches a breeze off the river that keeps the insects down and the water clear. The lodge sits on the Rio Dulce between the bridge and Castillo San Felipe, a stone fort begun in the 1600s that guards the mouth of Lake Izabal. Rooms come simply furnished, each with its own bathroom, a terrace, and wifi run on fibre optic cable. Showers run properly hot, drawn from a filtered, chlorinated, UV-treated water system piped throughout the grounds. Mornings start with free coffee on the riverfront, and the restaurant looks straight onto the water, where dugout cayucos loaded with fish pass at sunrise. It is a quiet corner of a busy waterway. Free kayaks cover the twenty-minute paddle to Castillo San Felipe, and a lancha gets you there in five. Guests swim from a floating platform just off the property or take the half-mile walk through the plantation to Fronteras for the market and the bridge view. Further out, Finca Paraiso offers hot springs over a rock ledge and three caves cut into the hillside, reachable only with a local guide. Downriver, the Garifuna village of Livingston is reachable only by boat, a full day's outing through the Rio Dulce canyon. Parrots pass overhead on migration, loudest at dawn.
