Umutuzo Lodge
Umutuzo Lodge sits on the shore of Lake Kivu in the Buhongo area of western Rwanda, six rooms built from wood, lava stone, and traditional brick. The lake is the dominant fact of the place — every room looks out over it from a covered terrace, and most activities here start at or on the water.
The two room types are Urukundo and Ubucuti. Both have a bedroom, kitchenette, fully equipped bathroom, covered lake-view terrace, and an additional outdoor shower. Ubucuti adds a separate living room and a bath alongside the shower. The lodge has a pool and a bar.
The restaurant draws its ingredients from two sources: an organic garden on the property, and Lake Kivu itself. The chef selects fish caught overnight in the lake each morning — Isambaza, Tilapia, and others — and the kitchen also works with chicken, beef, rabbit, goat, and mutton. Meals look out over the water.
On the lake you can kayak, stand-up paddleboard, fish, or take a boat to one of several islands — Bugarura, Napoleon and Monkey's Island, and Gishayu. Guided hikes from the lodge reach a Congo-Nile trail stage, a local parish church, and the path to Magaba. Rwanda has seven hundred and three recorded bird species, including twenty-nine Albertine Rift endemics, and the hills around the lodge sit within that range. Gorilla tracking is available as an off-site excursion.
The Kivu Hills Academy, on the hills above the lodge, runs a traditional Rwandan village where students demonstrate cultural practices and traditional dance. Nearby, a local community offers a hands-on banana beer-making session, and beekeeping visits to local honey producers in the surrounding hills are also arranged.
