Underwater Explorer
Launching boats straight off the sand, Under Water Explorer runs its dives from a stretch of beach in Ponta do Ouro, close to the Mozambique-South Africa border. It operates as a PADI five-star centre, with a marine reserve on its doorstep that draws divers for reef sharks, migrating humpback whales, manta rays and dolphins. The water holds steady between 21 and 30°C year-round. Trips run in small private boats with a dive team on hand for everything from a first try-dive to advanced certification. Surfers and kite boarders use the same bay, said to hold one of the longest rideable waves on the African coast.

Rooms range from en-suite beach chalets sleeping up to four, through simple twin and double casetas with shared bathrooms, to tent pitches for those who bring their own kit. Each self-catering block has a communal kitchen and fridge space. A pool sits behind the beach, and Charlie's Bar, tucked into a corner of the property, serves cold beer over a small plunge pool with a clear ocean view. Guests can also book a two-hour snorkelling safari or a 45-minute coastal boat cruise past the dunes toward the Ponta Malengane headland. Wi-fi is available for a fee, and 24-hour security covers the grounds.
