Unicornio Azul

Set at roughly 3,000 metres in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, Unicornio Azul occupies a working corner of Guatemala's highest non-volcanic range, where forest, pasture and stone give way to a small mirador with views toward the volcano chain on a clear day. Five rooms make up the posada: three sit in the main house, two in a smaller house at the edge of the forest, each warmed at night by a wood stove and heavy blankets against the cold mountain air. It is a compact stay. Horses graze freely across the grounds, and the property has shifted its focus from riding tours toward equine mediation, a coaching practice guided by the horses themselves rather than the trail. Meals are taken together in the dining room, home-cooked and built around fresh, often local ingredients, served from a daily menu sent ahead to guests. A short trail on the property leads through a patch of forest to the lookout point, while nearby paths and reserves extend the walking further into the range. Days here run on daylight and weather rather than a schedule, and nights bring a cold clear sky thick with stars. The last stretch of road in is unpaved gravel, flat but rough, so a careful pace is worth keeping.
