Utila Lodge

Water moves beneath the floorboards at Utila Lodge, the largest structure on the island built out over the sea. Set in the centre of Utila town, the property still keeps its distance from the street, reached across its own dock rather than through it. Eight rooms line the water's edge, each with a screened porch strung with a hammock and a bathroom fitted with dual vanities and a hot water shower. Air conditioning, ceiling fans, and wifi are standard, along with cable TV, and coffee can be delivered to the room each morning. The dock itself is the real gathering point: wide enough, by the owners' own account, to land a helicopter, it doubles as a spot for morning yoga and evening swims among eagle rays drawn to the lights after dark. A snorkelled artificial reef sits just off the pilings. The Sunset Bar and Grill faces west, catching the last colour over Utila Bay each evening, and stays open long enough for divers to trade stories over a local beer. Meals run from a full kitchen through the day, with buffet spreads for guests on all-inclusive stays. Utila itself sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world, with more than 60 marked dive sites in reach by boat. The lodge's own 42-foot dive boat, the Sea Sprite, carries a lookout platform 24 feet above the water for spotting whale sharks offshore.
