Vanilla Hills Lodge

Set into the forest along the Mopan River, Vanilla Hills Resort keeps its cottages spaced apart under the canopy, each one built by hand from local hardwood with minimal clearing of the surrounding trees. It is a family-run stay in Belize's Cayo District, a seven-minute taxi ride from San Ignacio town. Six cottage types range from a 29 m² treehouse to a 136 m² two-bedroom villa, each with a veranda facing the jungle. Rain water is filtered for household use, river water irrigates the gardens, and solar panels supply much of the electricity. You can hear the river from the deck at night. Meals draw on the estate's own greenhouse vegetables, farm-raised chicken, and an orange grove and coconut palms, with beef and Caribbean fish bought locally and served at the on-site restaurant. From here, guides run day trips to Maya sites and caves across the region: Cahal Pech's hilltop ruins fifteen minutes away, the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave with its Maya burial chambers, Barton Creek's underground river by canoe, and Caracol's Sky Palace deep in the Chiquibul Forest. Check-in runs from 2pm. Guests return most evenings to a hammock on their own deck, the forest closing in around the cottages after dark.
