Villa Maly Boutique Hotel

Set within Luang Prabang's UNESCO-protected old quarter, Villa Maly occupies a villa built in 1938 for Lao royalty, its two-storey form and terracotta roof still standing on the original site of a pagoda. The building later passed through decades of family history, American tenancy, and a spell as a small guesthouse, before the Apple Tree Group restored it as a hotel in 2007. French colonial-era detailing survives throughout: parquet floors, shuttered windows, and furniture in that same period style, set against a tropical garden and a mosaic-tiled pool. It is a compact stay, with rooms arranged around the pool courtyard rather than stacked in a tower. Superior rooms run from 24 m², with king or twin beds and mosquito nets over each. The Heritage Suite, at 48 m², adds a separate living room and a bathtub alongside its shower. Meals are served at an open-air dining room facing the garden, with a separate bar for cocktails and light snacks. Poolside barbecues can be arranged on request. The hotel sits a short walk from Wat Xieng Thong and the Royal Palace Museum, and guests can watch the monks' morning alms procession pass nearby streets most mornings. Bicycles are free to borrow, and the airport is a 15-minute drive.
