Villa María

San Bernardino is where Villa María splits into two houses, Del Val and La Lilia, standing about 100 metres apart in Paraguay's Cordillera region. Each house carries its own name and character, and each room inside is named for a woman of the family: Arsenia, Gloria, Paola, Raquel in Casa Del Val; Joaquina, Dulce, Teresa, Agustina in Casa La Lilia. The idea behind the split is generational. Rooms run to a practical size, air-conditioned, with a 42-inch television, cable, and a bathroom with a hairdryer and shower. The María Arsenia room, for instance, is 22 square metres, sleeps two on a double bed, and looks onto an interior courtyard. Del Val houses the bistro, La Lilia its own café, and each keeps a separate line for reservations and events. A pool sits on the grounds for guests moving between the two houses. It is a compact stay, built less around scale than around detail — Guaraní custom laid alongside older, imported habits, carried through in small choices of furniture and food rather than any single grand gesture. Guests can walk between the houses in a few minutes, and the layout rewards that kind of movement: breakfast at one, an evening at the other. Booking runs separately for rooms, the bistro, the café and events, each with its own contact line.
