Villa Orquidea

Found by Rafael and Queica in 2016, the old house that became Villa Orquidea stood in the heart of Mérida, its colonial bones intact but tired. They restored it slowly, keeping the original structure and mixing in furniture and objects from earlier decades, so new comfort sits against old walls rather than replacing them. The result is eight rooms, not more, each with its own layout: a Suite with a small kitchenette for longer stays, a Familiar room that sleeps four, a Grand room upstairs with a private balcony, and Superior and Deluxe rooms built around small interior gardens that pull in daylight. A pool and a bar deck anchor the courtyard. There is a library open to guests, and breakfast, cooked from family recipes, is included. Massage treatments run on request. The location does the rest of the work. Parque de la Mejorada is close by, the Museo de Arte Popular is a two-minute walk, and Plaza Grande, ringed by colonial buildings and the cathedral of San Ildefonso, sits under a kilometre off. The beaches near Mérida are a half-hour's drive. It reads less like a hotel and more like a house that happens to take guests, its rooms different enough that no two stays feel quite the same.
