Vipingo Ridge

Set on a ridge above the Mombasa-Malindi highway, Vipingo Ridge spreads across 2,000 acres of gardens, bush and golf fairways between the Chodari Hills and the Indian Ocean. The estate is built around the par-72 Baobab Course, Africa's only PGA-accredited championship layout, threaded with lakes and streams and shaded by coastal baobabs. Oryx, waterbuck, giraffe and zebra now range freely across the fairways, part of a wildlife sanctuary set up with Kenya Wildlife Service in 2020. It is a working landscape, not a backdrop. Accommodation runs from air-conditioned hotel rooms to villas of one to four bedrooms, each with its own kitchen, living room and veranda; some add a rooftop plunge pool. A short drive down from the ridge, the Beach Club sits on white sand facing the ocean, with a restaurant, bar and watersports centre. You can snorkel the Kuruwitu marine reserve just offshore, part of a community-led coral replanting project. Beyond golf, the estate runs padel and tennis courts, a 25-metre lap pool, a gym, mountain-bike trails, an equestrian centre and a motocross track. Rangers lead walking safaris and birdwatching outings through the sanctuary and mango forest to Chodari Dam. The range of it all is the point: a stay here can be built around fairways, ponies, reef or none of these.
