Set above one of the river's most active pools, the dining room at West Ranga Lodge fills each evening with anglers comparing notes on the day's beats. The lodge stands a minute from Hella, on the banks of the West Rangá, a river regarded as one of Iceland's most productive for Atlantic salmon. It is not a quiet fishery. The West Rangá runs roughly 28 km of private double-bank water, split into six to ten beats fished by 12 to 20 rods, and holds its water level steady through drought and heavy rain alike. Two waterfalls slow fish in the pools below, keeping catches strong even late in the season.
The lodge itself covers about 1,200 m² and holds 22 ensuite rooms, a stocked bar, and a wide veranda facing the water. A sauna and hot tub sit off to one side for the evenings after fishing. In winter the whole house goes to private groups, taken over for a night or a week. You can hear the river from the veranda after dark, long after the rods have been put away. Reykjavík lies about 90 minutes off by road, and Seljalandsfoss waterfall is a 25 km drive. Fishing season runs from June 20 to September 22, open only to anglers booking direct.
