Wild Glamping Gal Oya

In Rathugala, a village bordering Gal Oya National Park, Wild Glamping Gal Oya sits among savannah forest and mist-topped hills. The camp occupies a thirty-acre stretch of former chena farmland, now run as an organic farm along the Rambakan Oya. Nine of the region's Vedda community, the island's indigenous people, make up most of the staff, and it is they who lead the forest walks and cultural evenings. Two tent types are on offer. The Deluxe Tented Lodge covers 48 square metres with a queen bed and veranda, built for a couple. The Family Tented Lodge, at 80 square metres, sleeps four across a queen and two singles, with its own seating area and mini fridge. Days run around the wild rather than the room. A boat safari crosses the Senanayake Samudra, Sri Lanka's largest reservoir, built in 1949, where elephants gather at the shore and sometimes swim between islands. Rooms have no Wi-Fi, and that is by design. Trackers from Rathugala also lead treks to Rajagala's ruins and to the Henewala cave, and evenings sometimes close with the Kiri Koraha, a Vedda dance ritual performed around a clay pot. It is a quiet, working corner of the park, not a staged one.
