Wilderness Hotel Kieppi

Wilderness Hotel Kieppi is set in the middle of Saariselkä village, in Northern Lapland, a short walk from the shops and trailheads that ring the settlement. The village itself works as the hotel's front garden: cross-country tracks lead straight from its edge into Urho Kekkonen National Park, and Europe's northernmost downhill ski resort is close enough to reach on foot. Rooms sleep up to four and are done in a plain Lappish style, with a Kieppi Suite offering a double bed and sofa bed for families, and a smaller Wilderness Room, at 25 square metres, built for two. Each has its own bathroom and hairdryer. Kieppi Kitchen & Bar handles meals on site, serving Lappish and international dishes in a low-key dining room. The hotel runs its own activity desk, and from here guests join husky safaris, snowmobile trips, reindeer visits and guided walks out to watch for the Northern Lights. Aurora tours run by car, snowmobile or on snowshoes, timed for spots with little light pollution. One of Finland's longest toboggan runs starts nearby. Check-in is from 3pm and checkout by 11am; parking is free and unreserved. It is a practical, well-placed stay, built less as a destination in itself than as a working base for the Arctic outside its door.
