Wilderness Magashi Peninsula - Birding

Guests set out after an early breakfast to explore Akagera National Park, whose bird count rivals that of Kruger and runs past five hundred recorded species. The papyrus swamps fringing Magashi Peninsula hold particular rarities, among them the papyrus gonolek, found nowhere outside this habitat, alongside the red-faced barbet and swamp flycatcher, both localised specialities. Guides work the shoreline and reed beds on foot or by vehicle, tracking calls and movement through the papyrus. Akagera's mix of wetland, savannah and lake edge makes it one of the continent's more rewarding birding destinations, on par with far larger reserves.
