Ytri Vík

Set on the shoreline of Eyjafjord between Akureyri and Dalvík, Ytri Vík gathers a farmhouse and seven log cabins on a working stretch of coast once tied to farming and fishing. The three-storey farmhouse dates to 1929 and has been fully renovated, now holding a six-bedroom apartment with a fitted kitchen, dining space and its own hot tub and sauna. The cabins are newer builds in timber, each with a fully equipped kitchen, private bathroom, patio and seating area. Every unit opens onto a geothermal hot tub on the verandah, facing the fjord. The water is the point. Guests have watched whale-watching boats pass from the tub, and on clear nights the aurora shows overhead. Cabins sleep between two and 16 across configurations of one, two or six bedrooms, so the mix suits couples as easily as groups. A beach walk leads into Hauganes itself, where a bar serves fish and chips a few minutes' drive or stroll away. Akureyri Airport sits 31 km off, Grímsey Airport further at 83 km. Parking and Wi-Fi are free and on-site. Check-in runs from 4pm to 8pm, with prior notice requested; checkout is by 11am. It is a quiet, self-catered base for a fjord-side stretch of the north, not a hotel with staff at every turn.
