Zenagi The Expedition Hotel

Cypress-scented steam rises from the bathhouse at Zenagi, one of the property's quieter signatures. The hotel occupies a Kominka, a traditional wooden farmhouse in the Kiso valley, restored so that old joinery and beams sit against newer, plainer finishes. It holds only three duplex rooms, each with a bathroom on the ground floor and a bedroom and sitting area above, for up to 12 guests in total. Furniture and fittings come from local craftsmen and artists, so no two rooms read the same. Each room has its own hinoki cypress bath, drawn from mineral-rich water said to soften skin, and the wood's scent is meant to work like a forest bath indoors. Terraced rice fields run out from the building on one side; mountains and river close the other. A private butler runs the house, since only one group stays at a time. In the evening, guests can lie out on the wood deck and watch the sky; there is no light pollution here. Mornings bring a walk through the farming hamlet before breakfast, then, depending on the season, options range from river rafting to guided walks on the old Nakasendo trail. Check-out is at noon.
