Perfect for Birding, Nature, Wildlife

From a hillside above the dry Aba-Huab River, Wilderness Doro Nawas provides guests with far-reaching views across rugged Damaraland. The camp is ideally located as base from which to learn more about both the area’s ancient inhabitants and the visionary ecotourism partnership with today’s communities. The petroglyphs and San rock art of Twyfelfontein are within easy reach.

Sixteen guest units (including a family room) blend in with the scenery, and feature private verandas and outdoor showers. Sleeping out under the stars is also an option. Nature drives and walks reveal more of the desert’s surprising and superbly-adapted flora and fauna.

INSIDER'S TIP: Without bright lights and far from pollution the camp is the ideal setting for marvelling at the night sky. Opt for a night in the Star Bed to experience superb stargazing …

Highlights

  • Wilderness Doro Nawas offers a true cultural immersion amid the Namib’s dramatic desert scenery.
  • Nature drives and walks across otherworldly landscapes – wind-sculpted sandstone cliffs, broad valleys, dry riverbeds, and golden grasses.
  • Iconic desert-adapted elephants, giraffes, zebras and occasional sightings of black rhino and cheetah.

Destination: Wild, rugged and remote. Wilderness Doro Nawas is found in the Doro !Nawas Conservancy, which covers 412,000-hectares (1,018,074-acres) in the former district of Damaraland, which is now part of the Kunene Region. Set on the edge of the dry Huab River Valley, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) inland from the wild Atlantic Ocean, the camp has glorious views stretching in every direction. It’s the perfect destination from which to venture out and explore geological phenomena, petroglyphs – prehistoric rock engravings – and San rock art at Twyfelfontein, Namibia’s first World Heritage Site.

Experience: By vehicle or on foot, guests can look out for rare wildlife and learn more about how these desert-adapted creatures survive in the arid land around Doro Nawas. A day trip to visit Twyfelfontein, the Petrified Forest, Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes is equally rewarding. Back in camp guests can look forward to a refreshing swim in the pool and delicious, locally inspired cuisine enjoyed around the campfire. Later, they can marvel at the stars with their guide, or take a fascinating and informative guided night walk, rounding off the evening with a wonderful sleep-out on the room deck.

Purpose: Namibia’s rugged Damaraland and its desert-adapted wildlife are unique. And so is our joint venture with the Doro !Nawas Conservancy and a Namibian empowerment company. This local partnership serves people and nature by creating economic opportunities for local communities, all of which guests contribute towards just by staying here.

Wildlife: Damaraland offers up scenery as rare and unique as its wildlife. Despite no large concentrations of animals being found here, this seemingly stark environment is home to a surprising range of species. Guests can look out for desert-adapted elephant, oryx (gemsbok), springbok, and a variety of other species including bat-eared fox and black-backed jackal, with the occasional glimpse of black rhino, and cheetah. Birdlife is excellent, with several Namibian endemics, such as Damara red-billed hornbill, Carp's tit and Rüppell’s korhaan.

Wilderness Doro Nawas: The design and décor of the 16 natural-walled rooms (including a family unit) easily blend in with the surrounding scenery, and open to glorious views across the vast desert landscape. The airy verandas offer cool shade by day, and by night provide a wonderful space for stargazing and sleep-outs. An inviting private outdoor shower provides respite from the heat.

The shared main area includes beautifully appointed indoor and outdoor dining areas, a sparkling pool and a Safari Trading Store.
