Grootbos Private Nature Reserve Villas

Sandstone and thatch frame every window at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, where floor-to-ceiling glass opens onto 3,500 hectares of fynbos above Walker Bay. Two lodges occupy separate ridges on the reserve near Gansbaai, two hours by road from Cape Town. Forest Lodge holds 16 freestanding suites; Garden Lodge another 16, plus family suites that interconnect. Each suite includes a private deck, fireplace, and outdoor shower. Two private villas — one with four bedrooms, one with six — operate for exclusive use, each staffed by a private guide, chef, and butler. The four-bedroom villa includes a gym, sauna, and wine cellar. The six-bedroom adds a media room and two lounges.

Open-vehicle botanical safaris cross the reserve with a guide; 800 plant species have been recorded, six of them new to science and discovered here. Guided walks thread through Afro-montane forest and milkwood groves. Horses cover the same terrain at walking pace; pony rides in the paddock suit younger riders. Limestone caves near the coast hold Middle Stone Age deposits; guides lead tours to Klipgat Cave and the Walker Bay shoreline. Between June and December, Southern Right whales calve in the bay; land-based viewing from rocky outcrops and boat trips from Kleinbaai harbour both run daily. Shark-cage diving departs the same harbour year-round.

Meals draw on the reserve's organic farm and apiaries. Pork, eggs, vegetables, and honey all originate on-site. Fresh fish arrives daily from Gansbaai boats; rainbow trout substitutes when sea conditions prevent fishing. Breakfast is buffet; lunch a three-course menu; dinner à la carte. Spa treatments take place in dedicated rooms. A children's playroom includes organised treasure hunts and arts workshops.
