andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge

Phinda Forest Lodge sits inside andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, built into a dry sand forest — a rare habitat that supports nyala, duiker, and the full Big Five. The sixteen glass-encased suites, plus one two-bedroom family suite sleeping four, stand on stilts among torchwood trees. From the private deck of each suite you look directly into the forest canopy; nyala and duiker move through the shade below. Each suite has an en-suite bathroom with a freestanding bath, indoor shower, double vanity, mini bar, and tea and coffee station.

The main lodge area overlooks an open vlei where animals graze. A rim-flow pool, gym, and spa face the same view. In the evening, a wooden-fenced boma offers open-air dining, and a firepit between the two guest lounges serves as the gathering point before dinner.

Game drives run in the early morning and late afternoon, continuing after dark. Rangers and trackers work to your interests — tracking a specific species or spending longer at each sighting. On foot, guided walks read animal tracks and introduce the smaller detail of the forest. Rhino tracking on foot, with an armed ranger and tracker, is available at an additional cost, as is a night sleep-out in a bush clearing, e-biking through the sand forest on marked routes of between five and six kilometres, and a boat trip along the reed-lined Mzinene River.

Beyond the reserve, Maputaland's Indian Ocean coastline is within reach — Sodwana Bay for scuba diving on a coral reef that holds more than one thousand two hundred fish species, turtle nesting walks during the southern hemisphere summer, and beach outings to the Maputaland coast. Zulu community visits and cultural tours are also available. Staff speak English and Zulu.
