Anegada Reef Hotel
Twenty rooms on the sand, run by the family that built them
White sand runs straight to the door at Setting Point, with Horseshoe Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean, lying offshore beyond the shallows. Anegada Reef Hotel opened in 1976, built by Lowell and Vivian Wheatley, and is now run by their children Lawrence and Lorraine. It sits on Anegada's own shoreline, low and unhurried, twenty rooms deep. Ocean Deluxe rooms have been recently renovated, with shaded entrances, a king bed, and an oversized tiled shower with a granite vanity; wooden sliding doors give extra privacy. Standard Ocean View rooms look out to the sea or the garden, simpler but just as fresh, some with two full beds for families. All rooms carry air conditioning, a coffee maker, and an iron. Meals run outdoors, on the beach or at the Garden Restaurant, and the bar works on an honour system: guests write their name on a tab and settle before they leave. Evenings gather at the Sunset Bar, watching for the green flash as the light drops over the reef. Snorkelling, fishing, and deep-sea trips run from the hotel, and the reef's shallow, difficult waters have long kept the island quieter than its neighbours. Check-in runs from 3pm to 6pm.
