Apoka Safari Lodge

Apoka sits inside Kidepo Valley National Park, Uganda's northernmost park and one of its most remote, in the Kaabong district near the South Sudan border. The lodge holds ten chalets arranged around a rocky kopje, each built from natural canvas walls under a high thatched roof. Four are configured as twins with two queen beds; six are doubles with a king. Everything inside is handmade by local craftsmen: furniture, fittings, and the deep stone outdoor bathtub that sits among boulders on your private veranda, open to the savannah. A rock-hewn communal pool sits at the centre of the lodge for the hot afternoons.

Elephant, lion, and buffalo move through and around the camp. Game drives run twice daily in open Land Cruiser vehicles — morning and late afternoon — and guides tailor the route around what guests want to see. Snacks and drinks come on every drive. The bush breakfast option takes the morning drive further: instead of returning to the lodge, you eat under a kigelia tree in the field. Guided walks cover the same ground on foot, reading tracks, plants, and geological features at close range, from short outings to full-day excursions.

Guides are drawn from the surrounding area and lead cultural visits to Karamojong villages — sitting with elders, joining daily life and storytelling — as well as visits to the Ik, a small hunter-gatherer community in the hills nearby. The lodge reaches Kidepo by air transfer from Kampala, included in the rate.
