Kalakwa sits on a private reserve seventy kilometres from Hosea Kutako International Airport and about one hundred and fifteen kilometres from Windhoek. The terrain moves from savannah grassland through bushveld to rocky hills and dry riverbeds, and the six rooms — thatched chalets and canvas tents — look out over the open plains where eland, springbok, oryx, hartebeest, rhino, leopard and kudu range.
The chalets are air-conditioned with en-suite bathrooms; the tents are fitted with leather furnishings, brass fittings and lanterns, and open onto views across the reserve. All rooms have a verandah or deck, bath and shower, safe, tea and coffee station, and complimentary laundry.
On the reserve you can go out on open four-wheel-drive vehicles for game drives and photographic safaris, on guided rhino-tracking walks, on horseback, or on quad bikes along the gravel roads. Night drives run after dark, and a game-viewing hide gives you a fixed point to watch animals come to water. The reserve is malaria-free.
Back at the lodge there is a swimming pool, a fully equipped gymnasium, a sauna, and a spa offering body treatments. The Rhino Royalé is the on-site fine-dining restaurant, set at one of the higher points of the reserve; it serves a menu with wine pairing in formal dress. An airport shuttle is available on request, and the lodge accepts credit cards.
