Babanango Matatane Wilderness Camp

Matatane Camp sits on 130 hectares of fenced bush in KwaZulu-Natal, near Vryheid, above the White Umfolozi River. The camp is malaria-free and fully enclosed, which means it carries dangerous game safely — zebra, wildebeest, impala, and kudu move through the property alongside a wide range of bird species.

Twenty units across five room types spread through the property: standard chalets with double beds and en-suite showers, river-view chalets with the same configuration and a view over the White Umfolozi, four-sleeper family chalets with en-suite bathrooms, and two categories of twin-bed safari tents — Ukusa and Nhebela — each with an en-suite shower. All units have coffee- and tea-making facilities.

The main activities are on foot and in the air. Walking trails run through the bush; an obstacle course is on the grounds; and a multi-platform zipline crosses above the river, giving a clear view of the water and the animals below. In the evenings, the camp gathers at a traditional boma around a fire for a braai.

The camp has a communal dining setup, a conference centre, a children's splash pool, secure parking, and complimentary internet access. English and Zulu are spoken on site.
