The terrain changes as the route climbs. Flat stretches along open pasture give way to foothills as you approach Tenorio Volcano; from one ridge point, Miravalles comes into full view across the valley. Traffic on these roads is light, so you ride without much interruption from vehicles.

The wildlife along the route is what you would find in the rainforest edge rather than deep forest — howler monkeys, sloths, and toucans are regularly spotted from horseback.
