Blue Pass Arenal Volcano National Park Adventure

Arenal Volcano rises one thousand six hundred and fifty-seven metres above the northern lowlands of Costa Rica, and this guided tour covers the two main trails inside the national park that let you see and understand it properly.

The tour begins with a short boat crossing over Arenal Lake, dropping you at the start of the Peninsula Trail on the far shore. This path runs through rainforest with open views over the lake and several lookout points, and it is the better of the two trails for birdwatching and nature photography.

From there you move to the Coladas Trail, which cuts through terrain that volcanic activity destroyed and that is now growing back. The path passes through areas that were lava flows not long ago — the ground and the vegetation carry that history plainly. A naturalist guide leads both sections, covering geology and ecological recovery alongside the wildlife you encounter.

Arenal's last major active period began in 1968. Before that eruption, the summit crater held large trees and hikers reported warmth from steam vents underfoot. The east face carries the most vegetation now; the north and south slopes are still patchy.

The tour runs approximately four hours including transfers and departs at seven-thirty in the morning; afternoon departures are available on private bookings. Transportation, the boat crossing, a naturalist guide, fruit, drinking water, and the park entrance fee are all included. Bring long trousers, hiking shoes, a light waterproof layer, and insect repellent. The difficulty is moderate.
