Buhoma Lodge

Buhoma Lodge sits inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest national park — one of only two lodges with that position — at the Buhoma sector trailhead where gorilla treks begin each morning. The trek start point is steps away, which means you walk out of the gate and straight to the briefing area rather than driving from outside the park.

The lodge holds ten wooden chalets built with eco-friendly materials and standards. Each chalet has a private verandah looking out over the forest, a lounge area inside, a rain shower and bath in the en-suite bathroom, a safe, dressing gowns, and tea and coffee facilities. Beds are large; the rooms are sized to feel comfortable after a long day on the trail.

The central building is raised above the slope, giving the lounge, bar and dining room an unobstructed view over the tree canopy. The kitchen serves multi-course meals. On cold evenings — and Bwindi's elevation means evenings can be genuinely cold — there is a fireplace in the lounge.

A troop of L'Hoest's monkeys moves through the gardens most days. The lodge also offers guided forest walks, including a three-to-four hour trail to a waterfall, guided bird watching, and a community village walk through Buhoma that visits a traditional healer, a banana brewery and a local primary school. A spa and massage facilities are on site.

Mountain gorilla sightings in Bwindi run at over ninety percent, though they are wild animals and no sighting can be guaranteed. Visitors who do locate a group are given one hour with them. Because treks start early and can run a full day, at least one night at the lodge before tracking is required, and a second night is strongly recommended.
