Busanga Plains Camp

Busanga Plains Camp sits on one of the tree-covered islands that break the surface of the Busanga Plains, a floodplain at the northern end of Kafue National Park. The seasonal flooding is why the camp is raised and why you reach the last hundred metres on foot, crossing a footbridge over a permanent body of water. Four safari tents — two double, two twin — are set among the trees on the island, each with an en-suite bathroom, verandah, and outside shower. A separate starbed, raised well off the ground, gives a full view of the plains in every direction; you book it with the camp manager once you are in camp.

The boma serves as dining room, meeting point, and campfire at once. A table seats all eight guests and the camp manager together, with an open view over the floodplain. A wooden viewing platform built into a fig tree above the boma looks directly onto the plain below.

Activities run morning and afternoon. Game drives cover the open plain, where lion, elephant, buffalo, hippopotamus, lechwe, zebra, roan antelope, sable, wildebeest, puku, and the uncommon oribi have all been recorded. Walking safaris go out in the morning only. Night drives are also available. The plains hold five hundred recorded bird species.

The camp is run by Mukambi Safaris and is a six-hour drive through the national park from Mukambi Lodge. A pool and wooden deck overlook the surrounding wetlands.
