Bushman's Desert Camp & Self Catering
Farm Cha-re lies 33 kilometres north of Solitaire on the C14, a former Karakul sheep run turned base for exploring the Namib. The land runs through dunes, plains, sandstone ridges and canyons, and the camp was built where sheep farming had become impractical. It sits 113 kilometres from Sesriem, the entrance to Sossusvlei, making it a natural stop between Swakopmund and Windhoek. Twelve en-suite self-catering units front onto the desert with sliding doors that open fully and large windows on one side. Each has a private verandah, barbecue facilities, a shaded carport and a solar-heated shower. Campsites offer their own kitchen setups and private toilets, and a smaller set of bush campsites sits apart for those wanting less company. A shared pool and bar serve both room and campsite guests. There is no WiFi, by design rather than oversight. A waterhole draws oryx, Hartmann's mountain zebra and Namaqua sandgrouse, more visible since the 2022 rains ended a long dry spell. Guides run desert tours from the property, covering dune formation, desert wildlife and Bushman heritage, alongside 4x4 trails and self-guided hikes. The company behind it, Sossus on Foot, has led walks in the area since 1996. Evenings are quiet enough to hear sandgrouse settle at the waterhole.
