Campi ya Kanzi

Campi ya Kanzi sits in the Chyulu Hills with Tsavo West to one side and Amboseli to the other, on a four-hundred-square-mile Maasai wilderness concession where elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and wild dogs move through working ranchland. Kilimanjaro stands on the horizon to the south. The camp holds six tented cottages and two larger suites — sixteen guests at most — each with a private veranda, en-suite bathroom, and a coffee station. The suites add an indoor seating area and a full dresser set.

Because the camp sits outside national park boundaries, the guides — all Maasai, most of them raised in these hills — can take you walking for hours, run night drives, and leave the track when the land calls for it. Game drives run in fully electric vehicles: a custom Rivian R1T and a Land Rover Defender, both charged by the camp's solar system, which powers the entire operation. You hear the birds instead of an engine.

Other activities include horseback riding through wildlife, scenic flights over the volcanic Chyulu landscape toward Kilimanjaro, and a cave dinner in a lava tube about forty minutes' walk from camp. Day trips reach both national parks. The kitchen produces Italian-African fusion food, reflecting the founders' Italian-Kenyan background, and all seventy staff come from local communities.

Ecotourism Kenya awarded the camp its highest eco-rating — the first Kenyan lodge to reach that standard. The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, linked to the camp's operation, funds conservation across a broader area of surrounding land.
