Optional Walking Safaris

South Luangwa National Park earned its reputation as the birthplace of the walking safari, and Chikunto arranges outings on request rather than as a fixed routine. Guests set out with a Chikunto guide alongside an armed park scout, choosing between a shorter stroll of around ninety minutes or a longer route. Along the way the guide reads the ground: dung, tracks and disturbed vegetation reveal which animals passed and when, and what they were doing. Because animals on foot keep more distance than they would from a vehicle, sightings tend to be quieter and slower, though still close enough to leave a lasting impression.
