The East Ranga yields an annual catch above three thousand salmon, an unusually high figure for an Icelandic river. Its spring source keeps water levels steady regardless of rain or drought, and cold summer temperatures mean sinking a fly deep is usually the key to success. Fishing runs across nine beats spanning twenty-two kilometres, from the meeting point with the Thvera up to a waterfall no salmon can pass. A competent angler might expect four or five fish a day, with two-sea-winter salmon averaging around eight to fourteen pounds. Guides double as casting instructors, equally at ease with beginners and seasoned rods. Arrival and departure days can both be fished.
