Eastbrook River Lodge

Set on a working farm along the Hoogekraal River, Eastbrook River Lodge sits among indigenous forest and open pasture outside Sedgefield, near Knysna on the Garden Route. Eight cottages, each named for a local bird, are scattered across the property, from Forest Buzzard and Kingfisher to Fish Eagle and Emerald Cuckoo. Each has its own kitchenette and braai area. Woodpecker and Olive Bushshrike stand closest to the river, a two-minute walk away, and near a fresh-water dam used for swimming. Lourie sleeps a larger group across two rooms, with bunk beds, a queen bed and a shared bathroom fitted with a slipper bath. It draws its water from a natural spring on site. Days run to the rhythm of the land: canoeing and kayaking on the river, catch-and-release fishing, cycling along the Seven Passes, and birdwatching from the verandah. There is no artificial light pollution here, so the stars are properly dark. Evenings gather around a communal bonfire. The lodge markets itself as eco-friendly, and it runs on solar-assisted systems with a low footprint on the surrounding forest and pasture. It sits within reach of Addo Elephant Park and the wider Garden Route, making it a workable base for exploring the coast as well as a stay in its own right.
