Elewana Elsa’s Kopje Meru

Set on Mughwango Hill above Meru National Park, Elsa's Kopje occupies the site where George Adamson camped when he raised Elsa, the lioness of Born Free. Ten cottages are built into the rock face of the kopje — each wrapped around granite outcrops and positioned to overlook the plains below. Six standard cottages hold a double or twin bedroom, ensuite bathroom, and private deck. Three honeymoon cottages add outdoor baths; one of these rises across three levels with a separate sitting room. A family cottage links a double and a twin bedroom through a shared lounge. The private house stands apart with two ensuite bedrooms, a sitting room, and its own infinity pool. Meru National Park covers 870 km² — thirteen rivers cross the semi-arid landscape, lined with doum palms. The park holds a rhino sanctuary of 84 km² with over seventy black and white rhino. Game drives depart twice daily in open-sided Toyota Landcruisers. Rangers track lion, elephant, leopard, and northern Kenya specialists: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and lesser kudu. Fishing on the Tana River — Kenya's longest at 704 km — brings up catfish, tilapia, and barbell on hand-line tackle. Night drives enter the park after dark. Bush breakfasts unfold on the plains; sundowners pour gin and tonic as light drops. The main lodge infinity pool hangs on the hillside. An outdoor cinema screens Born Free beside the pool under the stars. Guides hold Bronze, Silver, or Gold certification with the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.
