Etendeka Hiking Trails - Hill Camp

Palmwag sits at the edge of the Kaokoveld, a stretch of the Kunene region known for rock plains, dry riverbeds and basalt hills rising from open desert. The Etendeka Overnight Hiking Trail runs on foot through this ground, below the Grootberg highlands, across land managed jointly by the Etendeka Lodge Company and neighbouring community conservancies. Guides lead small groups over two or three nights, reading tracks and pointing out desert-adapted plants and animals along the way. It is a walking trip, not a drive. Two rustic camps break the route, each with five sleeping platforms raised off the ground for safety and comfort. Each platform has its own flush toilet and basin, with a shaded area for an afternoon rest that folds away at night so guests sleep in the open. Beds are made up with cotton linen, down duvets and pillows. Meals are cooked over an open fire and eaten communally, with breakfast, packed lunch, dinner and local drinks included throughout. Namibia's night skies are notably dark, and on a clear night the Milky Way is visible overhead without any light interference. Guides speak English, German and Afrikaans. Anyone over twelve in reasonable fitness can join, provided they are comfortable walking for extended stretches across uneven, rocky ground.
