Famata Lodge

Famata Lodge sits on the beach at Ankilibe, a twenty-five-minute drive from Tulear on Madagascar's southwest coast. The accommodation is in thatched bungalows, some built up into the tree canopy, others at ground level. Each unit has a hot shower and toilet, a bed with mosquito netting, a minibar, fan, sofa, and work desk — a practical set of fittings for a working ecolodge in a warm climate.

The restaurant is the centre of the lodge. It is open-sided, which keeps the air moving and lets you see the surrounding trees and beach from your table. The kitchen turns out Swiss and Madagascan dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner — an unusual pairing that reflects the lodge's ownership and the local larder. Bungalows are available in different configurations to suit couples, families, or small groups.

From the lodge you can sail or canoe on the water directly in front, take guided walks on foot, go out on sightseeing trips by 4x4, or join a picnic or field trip into the surrounding area. The beach and the calm water close to shore are the main draw, and most activity at the lodge starts and ends there.
