Grootbos Private Nature Reserve Forest Lodge
Scroll
Set in an ancient Milkwood forest on a 3,500-hectare reserve above Walker Bay, Forest Lodge is sixteen free-standing suites beneath the canopy. Each suite has a canopy bed, a separate lounge with fireplace, an en-suite bathroom with double shower and bath, and a private timber deck with an outdoor shower facing the bay. Two suites include plunge pools. All have underfloor heating, air-conditioning, a minibar, safe, and television.
The main lodge has floor-to-ceiling windows that frame views across fynbos hills to Walker Bay. An infinity pool, restaurant, bar, curio shop, and conference centre occupy the central building. Breakfast, three-course lunch, and à la carte dinner are included in the rate; chefs use organic vegetables and herbs grown on the reserve's farm, eggs from free-range chickens, pork from hand-reared pigs, and honey from endemic bees that pollinate the endangered Erica irregularis. Daily fish arrives from Gansbaai harbour.
Guided drives cross the reserve at sunrise or late afternoon, tracking six plant species discovered here and more than 800 recorded fynbos varieties. Guided walks thread through Milkwood and Afro-montane forest. Horse riding accommodates all levels; pony rides run for children. Excursions reach Klipgat Cave, a Middle Stone Age site, and the Walker Bay shore. Whale watching operates from June through December. You can hear the forest from the deck. Spa treatments, transfers to all included activities, and wireless internet are part of the stay.
