Named for the painters, composers and scientists who shaped Vienna, ARTIST Boutique Hotel assigns each of its fifty-eight rooms to a single historical figure, from Klimt to Freud to Schubert. The building sits in Josefstadt, the 8th district, directly behind Vienna's City Hall. It is a short walk to the State Opera and the Burgtheater. Rooms run from compact Cosy Queens at 14 m² to Signature Kings at 25 m², with parquet floors throughout and, on the upper floors, sloped mansard ceilings and dormer windows. The top-floor Artist Rooms go further: KünstlerIn is fitted out in bold colour, EntdeckerIn in antique furniture, AbenteurerIn in velvet with views over Vienna's tiled rooftops. Breakfast runs late, until 1pm, in the WohnSalon, a sitting room built around an open fire and an antique clock. Coffee and pastries follow most afternoons. The Artist Bar opens at 4pm and serves cocktails and small plates until midnight, poured by bartenders the hotel calls artists in their own right. A small conference salon seats up to twelve, with a 42-inch screen and blackout curtains over daylight windows. The surrounding streets, Josefstädter Strasse and Spittelberg among them, hold Vienna's mix of independent cafés and old façades. It is a compact stay, built on a simple idea: that the city's history of invention belongs in the room, not just the museum down the road.
