Set in a restored neoclassical house in Plovdiv's Old Town, Gallery 37 occupies ground that has stood since antiquity. The Ancient Roman Theatre, built in the first century AD, lies just 15 metres from the entrance and is visible from the balconies. The Yellow School, Bulgaria's first secondary school, dating to 1868, stands 5 metres away, and the courtyard terrace looks toward St Dimitar Church, whose foundations were laid 800 years ago. The house-museum Klianty, from the mid-18th century, adjoins the building itself.
Eleven rooms occupy four floors, each hung with an original painting by a noted Bulgarian artist, among them Encho Pironkov, Kolyo Karamfilov and Rumen Zhekov. Bathrooms are designed individually, so no two rooms match. Standard rooms sit on the first floor near the dining room. Premium rooms on the second and third floors take in views over the Old Town's rooftops. Two of the three top-floor deluxe rooms open onto private balconies with skylights, and a two-bedroom suite joins a pair of premium rooms on the second floor. You can hear the murmur of the theatre crowd on summer evenings from the courtyard. Breakfast is built around bruschetta devised by the hotel's chef, served in a garden that doubles as a café and shisha bar. Free parking sits beneath the building, a rare thing this close to the Old Town's cobbled lanes.
