Kariega Game Reserve

Kariega is a family-owned Big Five game reserve covering twelve thousand hectares of Eastern Cape bushveld, bordered on two sides by the Kariega and Bushmans rivers. Lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, hippo, giraffe, and zebra all move through the reserve, and the rivers draw both game and birdlife — African fish eagle, crowned eagle, and martial eagle among them.

The reserve runs twice-daily game drives in open vehicles with qualified rangers, and both rivers are used for cruises, canoeing, and fishing. River Lodge guests can reach Kenton-on-Sea's beaches by boat. Guided bush walks are available at all lodges. The reserve is malaria-free.

There are five lodges. Main Lodge has twenty-four log chalets, welcomes children of all ages, and runs a midday children's programme. River Lodge has ten thatched suites on the Bushmans River. Ukhozi Lodge offers suites with private plunge pools connected by bush paths. Settlers Drift is a nine-suite tented lodge in a section of the reserve reached by a roughly thirty-minute boat transfer along the Bushmans River. The Homestead is a sole-use property for up to ten guests with a private vehicle and ranger.

The nearest commercial airport is Port Elizabeth, eighty minutes by road. Kenton-on-Sea is ten minutes from the reserve gate. The Kariega Foundation runs active conservation and community programmes on the reserve, funded in part by a levy charged per guest per night.
