Karisia Tumaren Camp

Tumaren Camp was built by Karisia Walking Safaris on the edge of a grass plain in Eastern Laikipia, in Kenya's Rift Valley region, with granite inselbergs rising along the southern horizon like islands set into the savanna. Guiding here leans on Ndorobo trackers, who read the ground for the stories animals leave behind. The camp holds seven tents, three set up as family rooms with a double bed, single beds and a day bed, and each has its own en suite bathroom with plumbed water and floor lighting. It is a small camp. Walking is the main activity, done at any pace with a guide, and camels come along to carry water and bags on longer treks. Guests can also ride out on mountain bikes, climb one of over 25 rope routes set up near camp, or visit a local school, market or homestead. Birdlife is dense in this part of Laikipia, drawing keen birders to the grasslands around camp. A 20-metre lap pool runs along the edge of the plain, with a bar beside it for evening drinks as the light drops. Days end slowly, with the inselbergs turning dark against the sky and the plain settling into quiet.
