Karisia Walking Safaris

Walking is the point at Tumaren Camp. Guests set out on foot with Ndorobo trackers, among the most skilled in Kenya, following the stories animals leave in the soil rather than driving past them. The camp sits at the edge of a wide plain in Laikipia, with granitic inselbergs rising to the south like islands on the grassland. Acacia trees dot the view from the sitting room, where a bird bath draws a wide range of species through the day. Seven tents are arranged in pairs to the east and west of the main area; three are configured as family rooms, with a double bed, extra singles, and a day bed. Each tent has an en suite bathroom with floor lighting and a private verandah. Beyond walking, the options run wide: camel rides from the camp's own boma, rock climbing on more than 25 top-rope routes set up for beginners and advanced climbers alike, guided jogs of 5 to 10 km with an escort, and visits to local schools and Masai homes nearby. A 20 metre lap pool looks out over open plains, with a bar alongside for evening drinks. Guides speak English, Masai, and Swahili. Kimanjo's market runs every other Wednesday, half an hour from camp.
