Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge

Built in the 1960s as one of Kenya's earliest national-park lodges, Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge sits at the base of the Chyulu Hills in Tsavo West National Park. Volcanic stone and timber frame 56 guest rooms, including five suites, arranged across three wings: a two-storey waterhole-facing block, a series of stone cottages, and a separate suite enclave. Every room opens onto a private balcony overlooking either the waterhole or the hills. The Kilaguni Suite occupies the highest vantage in the suite wing. It holds a king bed in the master bedroom, a separate sitting room, and a bathroom fitted with both tub and shower. Standard King and Standard Twin rooms contain either one king or two single beds; Deluxe versions add square footage and expanded waterhole views. Deluxe Triple rooms accommodate three single beds.

The central dining room and open-air stone bar face the waterhole; the bar commands views across the Chyulu range. Breakfast includes full English and continental options; lunch and dinner follow a buffet format with salad bar, soup, mains, dessert, and cheese. Bush breakfasts unfold on Lion Rock, a volcanic outcrop that once served as a lookout for Tsavo's man-eating lions. Sundowners also take place on the rock, timed to the descent of light. A lantern-lit bush dinner under acacia trees near the lodge features barbecue grills and, on request, performances by Maasai morans. Day and night game drives depart into Tsavo West. Excursions reach Mzima Springs, Roaring Rocks, and the Shetani lava flow — a black magma river formed 240 years ago.
