Kilima Camp

Kilima Camp sits on the Siria Escarpment at the edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve, overlooking the Mara River and the open plains of the Mara Triangle below. The position matters: the camp borders the official reserve perimeter, Oloololo Gate is fifteen to twenty minutes away, and because the camp sits above the reserve rather than inside it, horses are permitted — something camps on the reserve floor cannot offer.

Fifteen tents are spread across the site: twelve Classic tents and three Deluxe tents. Classic tents sleep up to three guests on wooden floors with hot showers and a veranda facing the Mara River. The three Deluxe tents run between seventy-seven and eighty-eight square metres, sleep up to five, and have large wooden decks. All tents look out over the same plains.

Game drives go out in open-sided 4×4 Land Cruisers. Guided bush walks run from the camp along the escarpment, where the density of other visitors is low. Balloon flights leave early in the morning over the river and plains. From July to October, the wildebeest and zebra crossing of the Mara River — the main event of the Great Migration — is visible from this stretch of the reserve.

The camp's kitchen uses produce from an on-site garden and sources fish and vegetables from within Kenya. The menu accommodates vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free diets, and can be adapted for children. Since 2009, the camp has paid the salary of a teacher at Il Tolish Junior School, a local public primary school that now serves more than three hundred and thirty children.
