Birding

Tswalu's dry savannah and dune landscape shelters a striking range of birds, with more than 260 species logged on the reserve. A private guide leads outings on foot or by vehicle, timed for the cooler early hours when activity peaks. Expect sandgrouse gathering at waterholes, bee-eaters flashing colour against the red sand, colonies of sociable weavers in their sprawling communal nests, and various raptors scanning the plains from dead trees or rocky outcrops. Because game drives here are private, there's no queue at a sighting; guests can pause as long as a bird holds their interest. It rewards patience and close attention to habitat.
