Lochsa Lodge

The tavern is lined with wood worn smooth by a century of elbows and built to outlast storms. Lochsa Lodge stands at the foot of Lolo Pass on the banks of the undammed Lochsa River in the Bitterroot mountains of Montana. The property comprises nine cabins, a year-round restaurant, a tavern, and a fuel station. Each cabin is air-conditioned and fitted with a private bathroom. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day regardless of weather, operating 365 days a year.

The lodge sells Idaho fishing licences and tags as a licensed vendor. It rents snowshoes and poles at fifteen dollars per person per day in winter and spring, first-come basis. Jerry Johnson Hot Springs lies 10 miles west; Weir Creek Hot Springs is 20 miles west. Trails for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing begin within a short distance of the property. The Lochsa River runs through a never-dammed drainage, holding bull trout, kokanee, steelhead, and salmon. The restaurant stays open during wildfire season and winter road closures. Outfitters arrange guided fishing, rafting, and horseback trips. The lodge has been a waypoint on the Lewis and Clark Highway since the early twentieth century. You can hear the river from the cabins.
