Miavana by Time + Tide

Miavana occupies a private island off the northern tip of Madagascar, surrounded by coral reefs and white sand beaches. You reach it by helicopter — thirty minutes from Diego Suarez Airport or one hour from Nosy Be — and that transfer sets the terms: this is a genuinely remote place, not a resort attached to a town.

The lodge offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas, each built from local hand-hewn stone and Malagasy timber, with hand-dyed textiles throughout. Floor-to-ceiling retractable glass windows open the rooms to ocean and mountain views. Each villa has a private pool, an ocean-view soaking tub, an outdoor shower, a veranda, and a complimentary minibar. The island is malaria-free.

The water is the main reason to come. Scuba diving runs directly off the reef, kiteboarding and windsurfing use the open channel winds, and the fishing operation covers both catch-and-release and deep-sea. Whale watching and turtle tracking are seasonal. On land, guided and self-guided walks, cycling, quad biking, and natural history tours cover the island's wildlife — Madagascar's endemic species extend to the coast. The spa, cooking courses, and gourmet picnics fill the quieter hours.

Communal dining, a bar, library, and activity desk are available in the main lodge. Wi-Fi is complimentary throughout, and room service runs around the clock.
