Moditlo River Lodge

Firelight and cutlery in a dry riverbed: dinner at Moditlo is served on the sand of the Mbesi River, under open sky, with the day's ranger stories still fresh from the drive. The lodge holds eighteen rooms within the Blue Canyon Conservancy, a stretch of the Greater Kruger region bordering the Mbesi River in Hoedspruit, Limpopo. Rooms come with a bath and separate shower, air conditioning, a mini bar, and a private patio facing the bush. Two game drives run daily, at dawn and dusk, in open four-by-four vehicles with trackers who read the sand for signs of the Big Five. It is a fenceless reserve. Elephant, lion, leopard, and the Blue Canyon's cheetahs move through on their own terms, without boundary fences to hold them. Meals also happen at the boma, where a local team sings after dinner, and at a shaded lapa near the pool, with biltong and gin and tonics between drives. Guests can add a full day into Kruger National Park itself, a hot air balloon flight over the plains before first light, or a visit to the Moholoholo rehabilitation centre nearby. Four private villas, including Ukanyi and Rhino's Rest, offer separate stays with their own game drives and staff. Check-in is from 2pm, check-out by 11am, and Hoedspruit Airport lies a fifteen-minute drive from the gate.
