Birding

Tswalu's semi-arid reserve holds more than 260 recorded bird species, from sandgrouse and bee-eaters to sociable weavers and a range of raptors and desert specialists. Guides lead early-morning walks or focused drives, timed to when birds are most active and easiest to find. The reserve's mix of red dunes, grassland and camelthorn woodland supports species found nowhere else in South Africa. Sightings vary by season and terrain, and guides adjust routes accordingly. It suits guests keen to look closely at the Kalahari, beyond the larger game, and to understand how its ecosystems fit together.
